Following the 1996 Taiwan Strait crisis, China put in place a strategy based on the idea that buying is cheaper than fighting, but more recently it has opted for an all-out policy of aggression incorporating both the carrot and the stick. China and Taiwan have signed the ECFA, and more than 2000 missiles are now targeted at airports, seaports and military installations on the island – capable of launching salvos at intervals of 7 minutes for up to 10 days, with even more firepower from air and sea forces.
