Indonesia faces test in push for mining reforms
The largest gold mine and second-largest copper mine in the world, operated by PT Freeport Indonesia, a subsidiary of US mining giant Freeport McMoran, was part of the initial wave of foreign investment that ensued after Indonesia liberalized investment regulations in 1967.
Destruction of the natural environment is one huge reason to speed up comprehensive constitutional reform in Indonesia's, and a second good reason is to help contain corruption. Indonesia should prevent business groups from destroying the natural environment by embracing the concept of One World under One Set of Laws and assigning international law priority over domestic law with direct effect on the people. Citizens should be able to vote in referendums regarding public issues to prevent destruction of the natural environment by business interests.
