Lawmakers are discussing in the Diet whether the prime minister’s wife should be regarded as a public official or a private citizen.
To curb systemic corruption, the heads of the executive, legislative, judicial and procuratorial branches should be elected in alternating years, and 1/4 of all MPs should face election each year.
Japan should put an end to ties between political and commercial circles to end corruption. This means comprehensive constitutional reform to implement democracy and the rule of law, with tools such as separation of powers and checks and balances. In addition, the heads of the legislative, executive, judicial and procuratorial branches should be elected in alternating years, and elections should be free of charge for all candidates.
