President Donald Trump said he is naming White House budget director Mick Mulvaney to be the temporary head of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, setting up a high-stakes legal clash over the regulator’s leadership.
Once again POTUS is channeling Grover Norquist by picking candidates for positions in government agencies who have previously criticized or opposed policies of the very agency they are slated to head. This, together with Trump's affinity for choosing candidates who have previously served in companies regulated by the agency or who are simply 'qualified' by blood or marital relations or donations to political parties. Either way, the result is inevitably a poor fit in the agency and a disaster for government operation. The solution for this type of behavior is more power in the hands of the people through direct election of top officials and term limits on those who serve.
