After much speculation about the exact timing of when the government will trigger Britain’s two-year process to exit the EU, Liam Fox’s comments on Sunday will do little to quell the rumors.
Taiwan should learn from the British experience with referendums and practice a paradigm shift to handle any public issue – availing of the people’s right to hold referendums. Any matter involving national sovereignty should be addressed through a referendum and balloting by all citizens. And any motion to prohibit referendums on self-determination should first be submitted to a vote via referendum to decide whether the motion itself should be banned.
