Putin opponent clears first step in bid for Russian presidency
Hundreds of supporters of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny have nominated him for president, which would in theory allow him to challenge Vladimir Putin in the upcoming election.
'Russia's Constitution is dysfunctional, and constitutional reform is needed to install a modified semi-presidential system. The president and other key elected officials should be limited to one 5-year term and banned along with relatives from running again for 6 years afterwards, the heads of government branches should be elected in alternating years and 1/4 of all lawmakers should face election each year. Article 39 of the Hong Kong Basic Law stipulates that the people of the SAR have right to self-determination under the two international human rights conventions. The people of Hong Kong cannot take their rights for granted. In Switzerland the threshold for petitioning a referendum is only 50,000 signatures, and with that citizens can express their opinion through the ballot box instead of taking to the streets.
