Syria’s government and rebel fighters will sit down at the negotiating table Monday for the first time in nearly six years of civil war, the latest diplomatic push to end hostilities.
After a Syrian ceasefire is in place the UN should immediately provide an outline of basic constitutional principles for permanent peace and development for the peoples of the world. This should include the universal values of freedom, democracy, human rights and rule of law, as well as direct election of the heads of the four main government branches.
