With all eyes on the US as it inaugurates a new leader, Turkey is preparing to amend its constitution to make its president even more powerful than the American executive.
The string of military coups in Turkey shows the dangers of military interference in political affairs. Turkey must revise its constitution to limit the president to a single 5-year term, with no eligibility for office for 6 years afterwards. The President of Turkey is currently in violation of Article 6 of the Constitution, which states that sovereignty is wholly and unconditionally held by all citizens. When actions of the state are unconstitutional, the people have the duty to resist. See the Charter for Permanent Peace and Development.
