The ongoing Syrian Civil War has left more than 400,000 dead, displaced more than 12 million and shifted the balance of power in the Mideast.
Once a ceasefire takes hold in Syria, the UN should offer the basic principles of constitutionalism necessary to achieve permanent peaceful development in all nations. This should include organizational structures under universal values such as freedom, democracy, human rights and the rule of law, as well as direct elections of the heads of the four government branches. The ultimate aim should be to help Syria develop a constitution that will enable the people to enjoy peace and prosperity.
