Pope Francis meets Suu Kyi in Myanmar, avoids mention of Rohingya
Myanmar's long-term road to peace must resolve the problems of unrest and killing of ethnic minorities through comprehensive reform of the nation's political structure. The current constitution preserves the junta's hold on power by outlawing elections and reserving 40% of the seats in Congress to the military. The problem of ethnic minorities and the Rohingya people can be solved only through comprehensive constitutional reform to institute a modified semi-presidential system with cabinet and election of the heads of government branches in alternating years. The current US administration's moves to control the media, and more specifically, to corral media outlets seen as critical of the President, raise all kinds of red flags regarding free speech and the rights of journalists to write as they see fit. They also echo Russia's use of financial pressure, veiled threats and even outright violence against reporters who dare to publish stories about corruption and malfeasance among high-ranking government officials and elites. Free speech is a universal value, and all democracies should call for constitutional reform to ensure media freedom and prevent the government oligarchy from monopolizing the media, the internet andall other channels of communications. Pope Francis has urged Myanmar to uphold human rights and respect all ethnic groups during a highly anticipated address in the capital, Naypyidaw. Despite pleas from rights groups, he did not mention Rohingya Muslims.
