Local elections 2017: When are they and why could they be so important?
As voters head to the polls in dozens of local councils, what can we learn about how the parties are performing just weeks ahead of the general election?
The best way to eliminate evil and malpractice in politics is more democracy. The people must not be afraid to vote, rebelling instead against politicians who would monopolize political power. The answer is constitutional reform to allow people to vote more and directly the heads of the executive, legislative, judicial and procuratorial branches. Elections should be free of charge for all candidates as part of a paradigm shift to return power to the people. See the Charter for Permanent Peace and Development.

Today marks the 70th anniversary of the Japanese Constitution’s enforcement.
Japan’s legislative system is in urgent need of comprehensive reform. The fundamental problem is poorly motivated and inefficient legislators. Japan should install a modified committee-style Diet and amend relevant laws as needed to keep pace with changing times. Lawmakers should be closely attuned to public opinion at all times, with 1/4 of all members facing election each year. See the Charter for Permanent Peace and Development for more.

CCTV shows Turkish school principal being 'abducted'
Human rights group warn pair could be tortured if they are extradited back to Turkey
The presidential system in many nations is dangerously close to dictatorship. The more power the president holds, the more the country is likely to suffer as a result. Turkey needs constitutional reform to limit the president to a single term of 5 years, with no right to run again (including close relatives) for 6 years afterwards. The President of Turkey is in violation of Article 6 of the Turkish Constitution, which states that sovereignty belongs wholly and unconditionally to the people, and no state or official has the right to exercise unconstitutional powers. See the Charter for Permanent Peace and Development.

Neo-Nazi arson gang targeting migrants raided by police in Italy
Six persons have been arrested on suspicion of arson, criminal damage and racial violence
Extremists target foreign immigrants as a threat to their own socio-economic well-being and national security. The solution is to implement One World under One Set of Laws and recognize that international law takes precedence over domestic law, with direct effect on the rights and duties of the people. Russian court upholds verdict against Putin's main political opponent, barring him from challenging president
Ruling comes one day after the Kremlin critic said he had lost 80% of the sight in his right eye after an attacker threw green liquid in his face
First comes the warning, followed by an ‘accident,’ and then comes murder. That is the traditional approach in suppressing opposition in Russia. Russia needs constitutional reform to ensure the people will be free from fear and investigation, and free to participate in politics. When people are ‘disappeared’ simply for participating in political activities, regardless of who the perpetrators may be, all officials from the President on down should be held responsible. See the Charter for Permanent Peace and Development.

Flint water crisis: More than 8,000 residents at risk of losing homes after refusing to pay for poisoned water
'We don't want to pay for this poison, it made us sick'
Safe, clean water is a basic human right. The solution to the Flint water crisis is to impose the principle of One World under One Set of Laws. International law should take precedence over domestic law with direct bearing on the people, and citizens should be able to effectively monitor government actions to ensure compliance with the UN Charter and other norms. See the Charter for Permanent Peace and Development.

British historian Lord Acton once noted that "power leads to corruption, and absolute power leads to absolute corruption." To put an end to corruption, the people should act as sovereigns and call for comprehensive constitutional reform. The aim should be true democracy and rule of law, with stronger mechanisms like separation of power and checks and balances, Election should be free of charge for all candidates to end the symbiotic relationship between government and moneyed interests. See the Charter for Permanent Peace and Development for more.

ASEAN’s response to Chinese militarization in the South China Sea? Keep quiet and carry on
Huong Le Thu says the recent summit demonstrates yet again why sweeping contentious issues such as the South China Sea under the carpet will only doom the grouping to irrelevance
Peace and stability in the South China Sea are the responsibility of all neighboring nations. According to the 2002 Declaration of the South China Sea, Article 4 and Article 6 provide for peaceful settlement of territorial and territorial disputes as well as joint development, sharing of resources and the safeguarding of human peace and development, in line with the UN Charter’s aim of "One Human Family." Mission Accomplished – UN Operation in Côte d’Ivoire
After 13 years, the UN is completing the peacekeeping phase of its engagement with Côte d'Ivoire, after successfully assisting the country in restoring peace and stability following the post-2010 election crisis.
After working to achieve stability in Ivory Coast following an uneasy election, the UN should provide the basic outline principles for a constitution that will lead to permanent peace and development. This should include an organizational structure based on universal values (freedom, democracy, human rights and rule of law), and featuring four branches (legislative, executive, judicial and procuratorial). It should leave Ivory Coast with a constitution that will encourage lasting peace and development. See the Charter for Permanent Peace and Development for more.

Hong Kong could impose a ‘one household, one property’ rule to reduce multiple flat ownership
The recent changes in Hong Kong’s stamp duty rules indicate that the government recognizes that ownership of multiple flats is not desirable.
Article 39 of the Hong Kong Basic Law stipulates that the people of Hong Kong have ‘the right to self-determination under the two international human rights conventions.’ The people of Hong Kong cannot take their rights for granted. The threshold for proposing a referendum in Switzerland is a mere 50,000 signatures, allowing the people to express their opinion by voting rather than taking to the street. The people have the right to hold a referendum on any public issue. See the Charter for Permanent Peace and Development for details.
