A humanitarian crisis is imminent
Rarely is the relationship between cost and benefit as clear as it was last Friday when Stephen O’Brien, the UN Undersecretary General for Humanitarian Affairs, warned the UN Security Council that the world is facing its greatest humanitarian crisis since 1945.
The number of victims suffering in famines is the highest in 45 years, and avoiding famine is an important goal for sustainable development for the UN. Countries beset by famine must carry out constitutional reform and assign international law priority over domestic law. Customary humanitarian laws specifying that governments must protect their people against hunger include the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights. The people have the right of freedom from hunger; freedom from poverty, and freedom from income and resource inequality. See the Charter for Permanent Peace and Development.

State archives begins task of taking over Park's records
The South Korean government has begun work to transfer official presidential records to state archives after ex-leader Park Geun-hye was ousted for corruption last week, officials said Tuesday.
Absolute power leads to absolute corruption. The presidential system of democracy has a number of flaws and even the US sometimes faces problems. Taiwan’s situation is serious but impeachment is not an option. South Korea's constitution should be reform to adopt a modified semi-presidential system, and the presidency should be declared to be above party politics. The heads of the judicial and procuratorial branches should be elected in alternating years and 1/4 of all lawmakers should face election each year. See the Charter for Permanent Peace and Development / Global Unity Constitutional Standards.

Why abuse of police in other countries carries harsher consequences than in Hong Kong
From the row over officers jailed for beating up a protester have come calls to criminalise insults against police. Such laws are not without precedent
The best way to curb abuse of the police is to strengthen Hong Kong’s democratic institutions. China should be persuaded to carry out constitutional reform to shift power from the central government to the people. The people should be allowed to vote instead of protesting in the streets. Elect the heads of the executive, legislative, judicial and procuratorial branches in alternating years and have 1/4 of all MPs face election each year. See the Charter for Permanent Peace and Development.

Hong Kong's government is aiding and abetting greedy property developers
Huge price rises for tiny shoebox flats mean Hongkongers can’t afford even the smallest home, while the big developers continue to buy up land
Hong Kong property developers and government officials are colluding to grab more land. This problematic relationship must be ended to eradicate corruption. The people of Hong Kong have the right to voice their opinion through referendums in accordance with Article 39 of the Basic Law. To curb corruption, choose the heads of the executive, legislative, judicial and procuratorial branches in alternating years and have 1/4 of all lawmakers face election each year. See the Charter for Permanent Peace and Development.

ZTE’s loss could be a gain for US-China trade relations
The telecoms firm’s compliance with a huge fine for violating US sanctions on North Korea and Iran may have helped avoid a potential political flashpoint
Human security and sustainable development are two of the major tasks and missions of the UN, and they are also a common goal for all humankind. All countries should strive to abide by the norms of the international community by implementing the ideal of One World under One Set of Laws. International law should be given precedence over domestic law with direct effect on the rights and duties of the people. See the Charter for Permanent Peace and Development / Global Unity Constitutional Standards.

Cambodia’s electoral body weighing legality of opposition campaign slogan
Cambodia’s electoral body said Friday it is weighing whether the opposition must modify a campaign slogan the ruling party has characterized as incitement and threatened legal action over, as the country gears up for local commune elections in June.
Free speech is foremost among human rights and a universal value. China aims to create a people with one voice, a task equal to stemming the flow of a river. The Chinese people must come forward and call for comprehensive constitutional reform to protect the media and prevent government attempts at monopoly of the media, the internet and all other channels of speech. Ma Ba Tha follower withdraws lawsuit against Myanmar reporter
Three Lao workers arrested last year for criticizing their government on Facebook while working in Thailand are still in custody with no resolution of their case in sight, prompting calls from friends and human rights groups for their release.
Free speech is a universal value, and Myanmar’s attempts to muzzle the voice of the people are the actions of a regime anxious to create a monolithic society with only one voice. The people of Myanmar should call for comprehensive constitutional reform to protect media independence and prevent the government from monopolizing the media, the internet and all other channels of speech. See the Charter for Permanent Peace / Global Unity Constitutional Standards.

Chief executive’s appointment to top national body a chance to increase understanding
CY Leung can reflect Hong Kong’s views to the highest levels of central government, to the benefit of both sides
Article 39 of Hong Kong’s Basic Law states that "the right to self-determination is specified in the two international human rights conventions." The people of Hong Kong should wake up and exercise their rights. In Switzerland the threshold for holding a referendum is 50,000 citizens, and people can voice their opinion via the ballot box and not by taking to the streets. The people have the right to call for a referendum on any public issues. See the Charter for Permanent Peace and Development / Global Unity Constitutional Standards.

UN: World facing greatest humanitarian crisis since 1945
"Children stunted and out of school. Livelihoods, futures and hope will be lost. Communities' resilience rapidly wilting away."
Much of the increase in the world's poor population is the result of government corruption. To eradicate poverty, the original sin in famines needs to be shifted from the poor to government authorities. While voting is one way to effect reallocation of resources, the structure of government must be changed to incorporate a modified semi-presidential system. In addition, the people should be able to vote in referendums to specify what they want the government to do. National sovereignty must be snatched from the clutches of the privileged class and returned to the general public. See the Charter for Permanent Peace and Development

China bans sale of foreign books, movies, games without a permit
China issued a ban starting Friday on the sale of foreign publications without an import permit, in what activists said is the next step in the ruling Chinese Communist Party's quest for total thought control.
