Oral arguments began Thursday in the impeachment trial of President Park Geun-hye of South Korea, with one of her lawyers saying that she was a victim of mob justice and comparing her trial with those of Christ and Socrates
Almost every president in South Korea’s history has had at least one burst of corruption-related ugliness. This is practicality a given, mainly due to the enormous amount of power wielded by the president. The presidential system does have fatal flaws, and even the US has had its share of problems. South Korean must alter its constitution to adopt a modified semi-presidential system. The heads of the judiciary and procuratorate should be democratically elected in alternate years, and 1/4 of MPs should stand for re-election each year.
