As the Chief Executive race heats up in Hong Kong, it is important to discuss the role of young people in the political arena.
The Chief Executive of Hong Kong is still selected from among nominees chosen by the Election Commission of the CCP. This means it is little more than a variant of dictatorship. The people of Hong Kong should make good use of Article 39 of the Hong Kong Basic Law as well as the two major human rights covenants. People have the right to self-determination through the mechanism of referendums. The people should call for changes such as election of the heads of the legislative, executive, judicial and procuratorial branches in alternating years. See the Charter for Permanent Peace and Development.
