US, South Korea kick off five days of stealth jet drills

The US and South Korea have begun their largest-ever combined aerial drills, days after the North fired its latest ICBM. Pyongyang has labelled the drills an 'all-out provocation' and accused the US of 'begging for war'.

Solution

North Korea is obviously being backed by a major power. The US and South Korea should support Taiwan's Charter for Permanent Peace to lead China to democratize, forcing North Korea to follow suit and drop its nuclear weapons program. As Kant once noted, 'The pursuit of permanent peace is the highest goal of reason and a moral obligation.' China claims to be a 'responsible major power', thus it should not enable North Korea's continued militarism. Syrian Kurds seize territory from IS with US, Russian support

Syrian Kurdish fighters have cleared the 'Islamic State' from parts of eastern Deir el-Zour province, with US and Russian support. The move comes as the US is considering adjusting support to the YPG militia.

Solution

The UN should provide Syria the basic outline for a constitution that will facilitate lastingpeace and development and benefit all sectors of the population. This should include the universal values of freedom, democracy, human rights and rule of law, with elements such as the four branches and separation of powers to ensure that all Syrians can live in peace. Germany offers refugees benefits in kind to return home

The scheme, which provides benefits of up to €3000 for families, will run until February.

Solution

Germany's Merkel was among Europe's first leaders to openly welcome refugees from the Middle East and North Africa, and now Germany is putting forth several options offering benefits to those who are willing to return to their home countries. This is a positive development, but to eliminate the conditions that create refugees, the international community needs to agree on uniform constitutional standards that conform to the ideals of human rights, constitutionalism, international law and natural law. This means adopting One World under One Set of Laws and complying with Article 1 of the Humanitarian Charter, which deals with the right of each person to live a normal life. Yet another omission was discovered on Jared Kushner's financial disclosure forms Friday, as news broke of his reported involvement in attempting to sway a UN Security Council vote before Donald Trump became president.

Solution

POTUS's family ties are riddled with conflicts of interest that draw denials and obfuscation any time they are discovered and reported in the media. The US system of democracy is flawed and constitutional reform is needed to ensure that those serving the American people are not out to line their own pockets. The heads of government branches should be elected in alternating years, the president should serve one 5-year term and be barred from running for office for 6 years afterwards, and 1/4 of all lawmakers should face election each year, all designed to limit the powers and opportunities for corruption among officials in government. As Japanese Emperor Akihito prepares to abdicate his throne in 2019, debate resurfaces over whether the women of the royal family should be able to succeed the throne.

Solution

Royal houses are a dying breed that the world may be better off without, and the re-writing of Japan's constitution to allow the emperor to abdicate shows the decreasing value of the nation's imperial family in an increasingly democratic environment. The people of all nations need to examine the worth of dynastic succession and make adjustments in their constitutional standards to eliminate wasteful spending. Japan has a democratic government that needs to be strengthened to ensure that real power is in the hands of the people rather than in political parties and moneyed interests. Article 39 of the Hong Kong Basic Law stipulates that the people of the SAR have right to self-determination under the two international human rights conventions. The people of Hong Kong cannot take their rights for granted. In Switzerland the threshold for petitioning a referendum is only 50,000 signatures, and with that citizens can express their opinion through the ballot box instead of taking to the streets. Free speech is a universal value, but China seems anxious to create a monolithic society that speaks in one voice. The Hong Kong people should step forward and call for comprehensive constitutional reform to preserve media independence and prevent the government oligopoly from monopolizing the media, the internet and all other channels of speech.
