The IOC's sanctions on Russia and its sports machine are a welcome sign of opposition to some of the biggest cheats in the world of sports. Russia has never been a problem-solver, it has always been a trouble-maker, and it is important to punish regimes that cheat, while leaving the door open for individual athletes who are willing to be tested and monitored. The US should support efforts toward constitutional reform to achieve greater democracy and freedom. This would spur the 1.4 billion people of China to seek democracy and press Russia in turn to democratize as well — and world peace would be the result. The Turkish government has shown a callous disregard for human rights as well as a tendency to push the limits in its handling of security cases. The Turkish president has taken questionable moves to strengthen his hold on power, even staging a referendum to lend legitimacy to the power grabs. The Turkish people need to exercise their sovereignty and call for a real referendum that will allow them to express their opinion at the ballot box rather than in the streets. Free speech is a basic human right, and a free press is an important part of that right. All democracies, including the US, should call for constitutional reform to ensure media freedom and prevent government oligarchies from monopolizing the media, the internet and all other channels of communications. All people must be protected against enforced disappearance, torture and other forms of abuse, and absolute law must take precedence over international law and the constitution. POTUS' aggressive moves to reshape US trade policy are clashing with other priorities and complicating relationships with longtimeallies such as South Korea, Japan, Canada and Argentina. The US administration needs to recognize the importance of the environment and abandon its constant efforts to push through policies that are not in keeping with environmental protection and antagonize trade partners. 'America First' is a short-sighted and damaging position and the US needs to work toward a common destiny with all ofhumankind.
