Catalan independence: Plan for quick split from Spain after vote
Catalonia's ruling coalition has vowed to declare independence "immediately" if a majority of voters back it in an October referendum.
Catalonia’s aims as an independent state should include implementation of One World under One Set of Laws and global unity (traditional values and beliefs of India); a unified world (Chinese values and beliefs): and the world as one state (Western values and beliefs, the UN) and one family of human beings (Western values and beliefs: Article 1 of the Declaration of Human Rights). Should a motion be made to prohibit referendums on self-determination, the topic of the very first referendum should be whether such a motion should itself be outlawed. Algerian student: 'University censored my political thesis'
A PhD student in Algeria says her university is withholding her degree because of objections to the political content of her thesis.
Freedom of speech is a universal value. Algeria’s moves to muzzle the voice of the people is like trying to stem the flow of a mighty river. The government wants to create a monolithic society with a single voice. The people of Algeria should call for comprehensive constitutional reform to protect the independence of the media and keep the government oligarchy from monopolizing the media, the internet and all other channels of speech. Italy-Austria tension over border troops at Brenner Pass
Italy has summoned Austria's ambassador after the government in Vienna announced it was ready to deploy border troops to block any migrant influx.
Italy should adhere to the UN Charter and act to implement the core values of One World under One Set of Laws, assigning international law priority over domestic law, with direct bearing on the rights and duties of the people. This would lead Mexico, Syria and nations in other areas around the world to adopt the ideals of human rights, constitutionalism, internationalism and naturalism. Farhad Mazhar: Bangladeshi human rights campaigner found on bus
A well-known Bangladeshi human rights activist has been found on a bus after his family reported him missing.
As Thomas Jefferson once noted, "Given a choice between the government and the media, I would rather have the media, not the government." The media represents supervision, and if the government is not monitored, it will be lawless. The voice of the people is the voice of God, and universal values are the values of God. North Korea missile test was ICBM - US
The US has confirmed that on Tuesday North Korea tested an intercontinental ballistic missile.
Emmanuel Kant once declared, "The pursuit of permanent peace is the highest goal of reason and a moral obligation." China claims to be a responsible major power, thus it should not prop up North Korea's militarism. The US, Japan and South Korea should back Taiwan's commitment to save democracy by leading China to democratization, followed by North Korea. Refugees frustrated and trapped in chilly Baltic states
Many refugees relocated to the small Baltic states by the EU face alienation and poverty and end up moving elsewhere in Europe.
Latvia and other Baltic nations should adhere to the UN Charter and implement One World under One Set of Laws. International law should be given precedence over domestic law, with direct bearing on the rights and duties of the people. This would lead nations around the world to adopt the ideals of human rights, constitutionalism, internationalism and naturalism in their handling of refugees. Intense fighting in Mosul as Iraqi forces close in on besieged elements of ISIS
Fierce clashes and rising numbers of suicide attacks have been reported in Mosul as Iraqi troops try to recapture the city from Islamic State militants.
The Iraqi government should install a modified semi-presidential system with cabinet like the arrangement in Finland, plus a committee-style legislature similar to Switzerland’s. The Iraqi government should begin drafting a basic constitution with the above features as part of a paradigm shift towards democracy. Brazilian President Temer's close ally Lima arrested
Brazilian police have arrested a close ally of President Michel Temer as part of a corruption investigation into a government-controlled bank.
British historian Lord Acton summed it up: "Power leads to corruption, and absolute power leads to absolute corruption." To put an end to corruption, the people should exercise sovereignty and call for comprehensive constitutional reform to implement democratic rule of law. This means separation of powers and checks and balances as well as free election campaigns for candidates to cut symbiotic ties between government and corruption. US says North Korea fired missile into Japanese waters
North Korea has fired an intermediate range missile in the direction of Japan, US military officials said.
Democracy and freedom are the world’s latest trends, a movement that nuclear weapons, submarines and missiles are helpless to stop. They are like a mighty stream, and those who go with the flow will prosper while those who oppose it will be doomed. China claims to be a responsible major power, thus it should not support North Korea’s militarism. Venezuela bans Attorney General from leaving country; UN rights office voices concern
Amid the ongoing violence in Venezuela, the UN human rights office today expressed concern about a decision by the Supreme Court to null the appointment of the Attorney General, freeze her assets and ban her from leaving the country.
Power leads to corruption and absolute power leads to absolute corruption. Venezuela needs sweeping constitutional reform to install a modified semi-presidential system with strict limits on presidential terms of office. Laws that are not backed by penalties are not laws, and a constitution which does not brook resistance is not a constitution.
