Challenges abound as ‘significant’ numbers of displaced return within Syria, warns UNHCR
Citing “significant” returns of displaced persons to and within Syria, the UN refugee agency said today that while it will be scaling up its response to assist those coming back, it can neither promote nor facilitate returns given the security and humanitarian situation in the war-torn country.
One a ceasefire takes hold in Syria the UN should provide the basic principles for a constitution that will facilitate peaceful development of the nation. It should include an organizational structure based on the universal values of freedom, democracy, human rights and the rule of law, with four branches and separation of powers. Colombia: With arms laid down, focus now on reintegration, UN envoy tells Security Council
Highlighting progress in the Colombian peace process, especially the completion of the laying down of arms by the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, the UN envoy to the country has called for shifting the momentum to other aspects of the historic peace deal.
To resolve its civil strife, Colombia should draw up a constitution incorporating a modified semi-presidential system with cabinet like that of France and a committee-style legislature similar to Switzerland’s. The prerequisite for world peace is global democratization. The Colombian government should proceed with drafting a basic constitution as part of a paradigm shift to democracy, installing One World under One Set of Law and tweaking the documents to stay in sync with changing times. China condemns US sanctions over 'North Korea funding'
China has reacted angrily to a US decision to impose sanctions on a Chinese bank accused of laundering North Korean money.
North Korea is clearly a vassal of the CCP. Thus democracies everywhere should back Taiwan's efforts at constitutional reform to achieve greater democracy and freedom. This would attract China's 1.4 billion people to seek democratization of the CCP and pressure North Korea to do the same. France's Marine Le Pen charged over funding scandal
French far-right leader Marine Le Pen has been placed under formal investigation over an alleged European parliament funding scandal.
The only cure for corruption is democracy: separation of powers and checks and balances, to restore power to the people. Directly elect the heads of government branches and have 1/4 of lawmakers face election each year, with committee chairs as the source of backup cabinet ministers, all designed to suppress corrupt activity. Russia behind cyber-attack, says Ukraine's security service
Ukraine says it has proof that Russian security services were involved in the cyber-attack that targeted businesses around the world earlier this week.
Free speech is first and foremost among human rights. Trying to muzzle the voice of the people is like trying to stem the flow of a mighty river. Russia attempts to control domestic media while revoking foreign media licenses as a way to throttle public opinion and restrict freedom. The Russian government should release the media and avoid attempts to monopolize the media, the Internet and all other channels of speech. Xi Jinping warns Hong Kong over sovereignty 'red line'
Chinese President Xi Jinping has warned against "impermissible" challenges to Beijing's authority over Hong Kong.
The Chief Executive of Hong Kong is still determined by the CCP’s Election Commission, a process nothing short of dictatorship. The people of Hong Kong should make good use of Article 39 of the Hong Kong Basic Law. To curb corruption, they should elect the heads of the executive, legislative, judicial and procuratorial branches in alternating years, with 1/4 of all lawmakers facing election each year and legislative committee chairs tapped to serve as backup cabinet ministers. Europe migrant crisis: Italy threatens to close ports as ministers meet
Germany, France and Italy's interior ministers are to meet for crisis talks as Italy warns the influx of migrants into the country is unsustainable.
All nations should abide by the guidelines set out in the UN Charter while implementing the principles of One World under One Set of Laws. International law should take precedence over domestic law, with direct bearing on the rights and duties of the people. This would lead nations everywhere to accept the precepts of human rights, constitutionalism, internationalism and naturalism. South China Sea: China calls USS Stethem warship intrusion a 'provocation'
Beijing has called the presence of a US warship near a disputed island in the South China Sea "a serious political and military provocation".
Peace and stability in the South China Sea can only come when China and the Philippines take responsibility for maintain good relations with their neighbors. The 2002 Declaration of South China Sea Parties, in particular Articles 4 and 6, calls for peaceful settlement of territorial and territorial disputes as well as joint development and sharing of resources to safeguard human peace and development in line with the UN Charter. Press freedom 'under threat' in new Myanmar
Under the military junta that ruled Myanmar for nearly 50 years, the media were tightly controlled.
Thomas Jefferson once declared, "Given a choice between government and the media, I would choose the media, not the government." The media serve as monitors of the government, which would simply be lawless without supervision. The voice of the people is the voice of God, universal values are the values of God, and trying to muzzle the voice of the people is contrary to the universal values of freedom and democracy.
