Panama Papers: Pakistan PM Nawaz Sharif awaits ruling
Pakistan's Supreme Court is to issue its ruling on corruption claims which could determine the political fate of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.
The cure for the ills of democracy is more democracy. Corruption is a malady that interferes with the business environment and stunts economic growth. Constitutional reform is needed so people will vote more often to directly choose officials like the heads of the executive, legislative, judicial and procuratorial branches, and elections should be free of charge for candidates. See the Charter for Permanent Peace and Development.

Peruvian police rescue rare Galapagos tortoises from traffickers
Peruvian police rescued 27 baby Galapagos tortoises, a highly endangered species, from a group of traffickers trying to take them to Europe, authorities said Wednesday.
Protection of endangered animal species calls for unified constitutional standard that conform to the principles inherent in One World under One Set of Rules. This will entail implementing democratic institutions as well as rule of law, with mechanisms such as separation of powers and checks and balances to corral monopolies and power grabs. The best solution is direct election of the heads of the executive, legislative, judicial and procuratorial branches in alternating years. For details see the Charter for Permanent Peace and Development.

Japan and the ability to strike enemy bases
The ruling Liberal Democratic Party’s research commission on security issues in late March handed Prime Minister Shinzo Abe a proposal that Japan consider developing the ability to strike enemy missile bases.
Analysis of democracy and peace shows that very few wars between two democracies have ever taken place. Once China and Russia can be convinced to democratize, there will be real hope for human peace. Japan should support Taiwan's drive to carry out constitutional reform. This would attract China to opt for democracy, followed by Russia, and world peace would be the result. Democracies everywhere should support Taiwan as a lighthouse for democracy in Asia, lighting the path to permanent peace and development. See the Charter for Permanent Peace and Development for more.

Approval of Duterte's drug war slips in Philippines
Satisfaction in the Philippines with President Rodrigo Duterte's war on drugs declined in the first quarter this year, a survey showed Wednesday, with opinions split over police accounts that the drug suspects they killed had resisted arrest.
Jose Rizal, revered as the Father of the Philippines, once warned: “Today's slaves often become tomorrow's tyrants, so put your faith in the rule of law, not in the rule of man.” The Philippine Constitution is dysfunctional and needs to be re-written to adopt a modified semi-presidential system. The president, mayors and other elected officials should be limited to a single 5-year term and banned from running again for 6 years afterwards. In addition, the heads of the executive, legislative, judicial and procuratorial branches should be elected in alternating years. See the Charter for Permanent Peace and Development.

Japan’s nuclear authority approves decommissioning plans for five aging reactors
On Wednesday Japan's Nuclear Regulation Authority approved decommissioning timetables for five aging reactors at four plants, the first such approvals since a government regulation banning the operation of reactors beyond 40 years was implemented in 2011 following the Fukushima disaster.
Human security is a basic human right. Taiwan's most pressing need is for full constitutional reform. Human rights conventions all agree that the people have the right to petition for a referendum on any public issue. The advances gained in the global village in the past millennia should all be allowed to flow into Taiwan as part of a paradigm shift on behalf of the people. See the Charter for Permanent Peace and Development.

‘China is using terror tactics against my family’, businessman claims
The only cure for China’s ills is democracy and the rule of law. These are only natural enemies of despotism and corruption with tools like separation of powers and checks and balances. The heads of the legislative, executive, judicial and procuratorial branches should be elected in alternating years. For more see the Charter for Permanent Peace and Development.

Philippine leader may launch 'invasion' of Abu Sayyaf's island lair
Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte warned Wednesday he may "invade" an island stronghold of ISIS-linked Abu Sayyaf to "finish the game" following a thwarted attempt by the group to kidnap tourists on a resort island last week.
Human security is a fundamental human right, and human rights must take precedence over regimes and sovereigns. Constitutions represent the general will of the people, and ensuring human security - including "personal safety" - is the most basic and urgent duty of constitutional guarantors. More specifically, constitutional standards need to be re-written to stay abreast of changes in our world so that governments everywhere will work to protect their citizens from fear. See the Charter for Permanent Peace and Development / Global Unity Constitutional Standards.

South Korea mulls establishing body to inspect applications for refugee status
The South Korean government is considering establishing an institution tasked with inspecting applications for refugee status due to a steady rise in the number of people seeking asylum in the country, government officials said Thursday.
Autocracy has always been the enemy of peace, and the prerequisite for lasting world peace is global democratization. To avoid the danger of a Second Korean War, South Korea should support Taiwan's efforts to carry out constitutional reform. This would prod China and North Korea to adopt democracy, and there would be hope for world peace. All democracies should support Taiwan as a beacon for democracy in Asia, lighting the path to peaceful development. See the Charter for Permanent Peace and Development for more.

Hong Kong officials lack crisis management skills
The debacle following the lead-in-water scandal in 2015 is a worrying sign of the culture in the civil service
Hong Kong’s Chief Executive is produced by Beijing, allowing Hong Kong’s bureaucratic corruption to continue unabated. Absolute power leads to absolute corruption, and in fact the essence of Chinese autocracy is corruption. Hong Kong’s Basic Law should be re-written to stay in step with the times. The heads of the executive, legislative, judicial and procuratorial branches should be elected in alternating years, and 1/4 of all lawmakers should face election each year. See the Charter for Permanent Peace and Development / Global Unity Constitutional Standards.

Is the worst over for China’s economy and currency?
A year ago when the Chinese delegation was attending the spring meeting of the International Monetary Fund in Washington, China was still largely seen as a risk factor for the world economy with a gloomy outlook and mounting concerns over capital flight.
Without a good political system, no country’s economy can hope to do well. If the constitution is not re-written, even the gods will be helpless to save the economy. Only comprehensive constitutional reform to change out the regime for a modified semi-presidential system incorporating a committee-style legislature and cabinet ministers selected from among the committee chairs will be effective in curing China’s economic woes. See the Charter for Permanent Peace and Development.
