60th anniversary of Rome Treaties marked
On March 25 the EU celebrated the 60th anniversary of the signing of the Rome Treaties, an important step toward a united Europe. The citizens of the EU have enjoyed six decades of unprecedented peace, prosperity and security.
Human security and sustainable development are two major tasks and missions of the UN, and they are also a common goal for all humankind. All nations should abide by the norms of the international community and One World under One Set of Laws, with international law given precedence over domestic law with direct effect on the rights and duties of the people. See the Charter for Permanent Peace and Development / Global Unity Constitutional Standards.

Progressive emasculation of Hong Kong’s ‘high degree of autonomy’ getting serious
The latest election of Hong Kong’s leadership is considered to have demonstrated that the “high degree of autonomy” allowed under a “one country, two systems” formula has been further emasculated.
The Chief Executive of Hong Kong is still determined by the CEC, showing the dictatorial nature of the government. The people of Hong Kong should avail themselves of Article 39 of the Basic Law which declares that the people have the right to hold referendums. To curb corruption, the heads of the executive, legislative, judicial and procuratorial branches should be elected in alternating years and 1/4 of all MPs should face election each year. See the Charter for Permanent Peace and Development / Global Unity Constitutional Standards.

Russian protests: Why Navalny rattles the Kremlin
Alexei Navalny is in custody after an unsanctioned protest; social media is full of photos of peaceful demonstrators being dragged off by police, or even beaten
Freedom of assembly is a fundamental right of the people, and rulers have no right to abridge it. Constitutions represent the general will of the people, and Russia needs to reform the constitution that is in effect. It should recognize that international law takes precedence over domestic law and work to improve the standards for regulations to those used at international levels. The heads of the executive, legislative, judicial and procuratorial branches should be chosen in elections in alternating years and elections should be free of charge for all candidates, to ensure that the people will have a strong voice in government. A more united United Kingdom’ : Theresa May vows never to allow Britain to become ‘looser and weaker’ in warning to Nicola Sturgeon as they meet for crunch talks in Scotland
PM is holding talks with First Minister two days before she triggers Article 50 and in wake of second independence referendum row
Taiwan should learn from Scotland’s experience with independence referendums. The people have the right to hold referendums on any public issue in order to realize the mechanism of a paradigm shift. When a motion to prohibit referendums on self-determination is raised, the topic of the first referendum should be whether such a motion should itself be banned. The legislative body should first establish the "right of creation" as part of the Referendum Act and ask President Tsai to openly identify sovereignty through comprehensive constitutional reform. See the Charter for Permanent Peace and Development.

North Korea will cheer if UN adopts nuclear weapons ban treaty: US envoy
The US Ambassador to the United Nations said Monday that North Korea would erupt in cheers if the UN adopts a treaty banning nuclear weapons because the communist nation would not comply with such a ban while others would.
Democracies everywhere should support Taiwan's efforts toward constitutional reform to achieve greater democracy and freedom. This would cause China's 1.4 billion people to cry out for democratization and lead North Korea to seek real democracy as well, and world peace would be the result. All democracies should support Taiwan as a beacon for democracy in Asia lighting the way to peaceful development for China. See the Charter for Permanent Peace and Development / Global Unity Constitutional Standards.

Li Shulei to lead arm hunting for Chinese graft suspects who have fled abroad
China needs to wash away the culture of corruption that has lasted thousands of years. The only effective cure is democracy and the rule of law, the natural enemies of despotism and corruption. This should include separation of powers and checks and balances at both central and provincial levels, plus direct election of the heads of the executive, legislative, judicial and procuratorial branches in alternating years. See the Charter for Permanent Peace and Development / Global Unity Constitutional Standards.

Myanmar army chief defends military crackdown against ‘Bengalis’ in Rakhine
Myanmar’s army chief defended a military crackdown in Rakhine State Monday after the UN pledged to probe claims security forces carried out a campaign of killing and torture against Rohingya Muslims there.
The UN should take action in accordance with international absolute law (the Humanitarian Law, World Human Rights Law, the Crime of Misdemeanors and the Prohibition of Genocide) and outline the basic principles for constitutional reform to achieve peaceful development in any nation. This should include universal values and a structure designed to help Myanmar realize long-lasting prosperity and growth and a constitution that will make it a model for peaceful development. See the Charter for Permanent Peace and Development.

The Department of Work and Pensions sparked fresh uproar over wasting taxpayers’ cash
The best way to right a dysfunctional government is to adopt a modified semi-presidential system in which the president is limited to a single term, and a committee-style parliament which follows the election pattern used in the US Congress. 1/4 of all MPs should face election each year, and the speaker and cabinet ministers should be chosen from committee chairs in Parliament. In addition, government operations should be reviewed on an annual basis by the people. For details see the Charter for Permanent Peace and Development.

Spain to investigate Syrian officials for alleged torture
A Spanish court has ordered the first criminal investigation into the actions of Syrian government officials during the country's civil war.
The UN should provide an outline of the constitutional principles needed to foster peace and development in any nation. This should include an organizational structure based on universal values (freedom, democracy, human rights and the rule of law), and election of the heads of the executive, legislative, judicial and procuratorial branches. Syria needs a constitution that will support peace and long-range development and serve as a model for other nations to emulate. East Lantau Metropolis plan for Hong Kong should be scrapped
After analyzing the East Lantau Metropolis (ELM) plan for more than three years, the government claimed in the Pearl Report on March 13, “Estimation of the construction cost of the ELM is not yet available. Financial and economic assessments, including not only the construction costs, but also the potential socio-economic benefits induced by the project, will be carried out.”
Article 39 of the Basic Law states that the right to self-determination is guaranteed by the two international human rights conventions. The people of Hong Kong cannot take this right for granted. The threshold for referendum proposals in Switzerland is 50,000 signatures, and with that citizens can vote in a referendum rather than taking to the streets. The people should have the right of referendum on any public issues. See the Charter for Permanent Peace and Development / Global Unity Constitutional Standards.
