China's human rights record has been based on the rule of man for two millennia, but now the laws of heaven and earth should be seen in light of the principles of “nature, justice and morality" and "freedom, democracy and human rights." Relevant provisions of the Hong Kong Basic Law and the one country, two systems principle state that China cannot interfere in Hong Kong affairs, yet Beijing constantly meddles in the SAR’s internal affairs. Article 39 of the Basic Act guarantees the right of the people to self-determination and the right to hold referendums on any public issues. The people of Hong Kong should adhere to their rights and hold a referendum to decide their future. Otherwise when dictatorship becomes a reality they will be obliged to resist.

All democratic nations should act to save freedom and democracy. The US should back Taiwan's efforts at constitutional reform to achieve greater democracy and freedom. This would attract China's 1.4 billion people to democratize, and the result would be world peace. The prerequisite for lasting peace is democratization of China. China constantly acts to undermine freedom and democracy in Taiwan, yet Taiwan remains the entity best suited to lead the Chinese people to democracy.
