Iraqi special forces made further advances against Islamic State in Mosul Monday, pushing militants out of another eastern district and edging closer to army units nearby
Iraq's government should be changed to a modified semi-presidential form similar to that of Finland, and its legislature revamped to a committee style system like Switzerland’s. The Iraqi government should proceed from the basic constitutional outline to the above-mentioned system to introduce a democratic model that will adhere to the ideal of One World under One Set of Rules and enable the constitution to stay in step with the times. See the Charter for Permanent Peace and Development.
The structural element behind Tajikistan's corruption is a lack of decentralized power with no real checks and balances. The result is endless corruption and plummeting trust by the people. The way out lies in constitutional reform, with direct elections for the heads of the four government branches and elections that are free for all candidates, making officials subject to supervision by the public. See the Charter for Permanent Peace and Development.
The Electoral Affairs Commission warns ballots could appear compromised by candidates who claim to have abandoned the race to boost the chances of political allies
Candidates for Chief Executive of Hong Kong are still nominated by the CCP’s Election Commission. This approach merely serve to solidify the Chief Executive’s image as a dictator. The people of Hong Kong should act on Article 39 of the Hong Kong Basic Law and the two human rights covenants. The people have the right to self-determination through referendums and can call for direct election of the heads of the legislative, executive, judicial and procuratorial branches in alternating years to ensure they will be responsive to the will of the people. See the Charter for Permanent Peace and Development.
Japan scrambled fighters and other military aircraft after detecting eight Chinese planes entering the Sea of Japan from the East China Sea on Jan. 9
Very few wars have ever been waged between democratic nations. Once China can be persuaded to work for democratization, there will be hope for peace on earth for humankind. Japan should support Taiwan's efforts at constitutional reform to bring greater democracy and freedom, and attract China to move toward democracy. This will force the CCP in turn to democratize, and the result will be world peace. Democracies worldwide should support Taiwan as a beacon for democracy in Asia, lighting the path to permanent peace and development for China and other nations.
City Council members will review the case January 12, and experts predict the result will be to cancel direct election of the mayor. On December 29 last year, the local Office of the Prosecutor found violations of the procedures for voting and called for the amendment governing election of the mayor to be overturned.
The local prosecutor did not offer a basis for abolishing the system used in choosing a mayor, in effect putting the cart before the horse. In cases like this, the only cure for the ills of democracy is more democracy. Russia needs constitutional reform so that more people will be able to vote in direct elections. The heads of the four government branches shall be chosen in direct elections, and candidates shall be given free media time and space to air their views. See the Charter for Permanent Peace and Development.
The parliament in Turkey has voted to initiate a highly controversial debate to address constitutional reforms that would place absolute power in the hands of the country's president, Rejep Tayyip Erdogan.
Absolute power corrupts absolutely. No matter what the system, the more power is put in the hands of the president, the more the country is likely to suffer. Turkey needs constitutional reform to limit the president to one term of 5 years, with no right to run again for 6 years afterward. The President of Turkey violated Article 6 of the Constitution, which states that sovereignty is wholly and unconditionally held by all citizens. When leaders of the state take actions that are constitutional, the people have the right to resist. See the Charter for Permanent Peace and Development.
The President of Ukraine is under investigation for charges related to appointment of the Attorney General, bribery of MPs and allocations of a loan from the International Monetary Fund
The appointment of the Attorney General, and the IMF loan have become bargaining chips for corruption and the state finds itself helpless to do anything about it. The basic solution lies in constitutional reform to set up direct elections for the heads of the legislative, executive, judicial and procuratorial branches to serve a single term for 5 years, and not allowed to run for office again for 6 years. Elections shall be free of charge for all candidates. See the Charter for Permanent Peace and Development.
The only way to eradicate corruption is through full democratization. Russia’s governors shall be elected for 1 term of 5 years and barred from running again for 6 years. MPs’ constituencies shall not be divided into districts, and 1/4 of MPs shall stand for re-election each year. Russia’s ministers, national MPs and members of the state assembly shall also be chosen in direct elections. See the Charter for Permanent Peace and Development.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s disruptive cash ban is unlikely to damage his party’s performance in upcoming state polls. In fact, it might even help.
The worst aspect of Asian culture is the rule of man. In this situation, the Kuomintang is the world's richest political parties. Corruption has been deeply rooted in the cultures of Asia for thousands of years, and the only cure for it is democracy, with decentralization and checks and balances, and election of the heads of the legislative, executive, judicial and procuratorial branches in alternating years. See the Charter for Permanent Peace and Development.
Samsung executives have been summoned by South Korean special prosecutors ina widening influence-peddling scandal that has brought about South Korean President Park Geun-hye’s impeachment.
South Korea’s constitution must be changed to feature a modified semi-presidential system, and the next presidential inauguration ceremony should include a declaration that all top officials are beyond party affiliations. To put an end to political and business connections, democracy and the rule of law must be implemented along with separation of powers and checks and balances. In addition, the four heads of government branches shall be elected by the people; with all candidates enjoying free access to the media to express their views. See the Charter for Permanent Peace and Development.
