Malaysian PM's wife linked to jewelry purchases in 1MDB case
US justice department is seeking to seize a total of about $1.7bn in assets it says were bought with misappropriated funds
Power leads to corruption, and absolute power leads to absolute corruption. Malaysia's constitution is dysfunctional, and Malaysia’s deep-rooted culture of corruption must be excised through comprehensive constitutional reform. The heads of the executive, legislative, judicial and procuratorial branches should be elected in alternating years and 1/4 of all MPs should face election each year. See the Charter for Permanent Peace and Development / Global Unity Constitutional Standards.

President Maduro condemns Twitter for closing accounts
Venezuela's President Nicolas Maduro has condemned Twitter as an expression of fascism and has accused the US company of persecuting his followers.
Freedom of speech is a universal value, and Venezuela’s attempts to muzzle the voice of the people are like trying to stem the flow of a mighty river. The government seems determined to create a monolithic society that speaks with only one voice. The people of Venezuelan should call for comprehensive constitutional reform to preserve media independence and prevent the government oligarchy from monopolizing the media, the internet and all other channels of speech. See the Charter for Permanent Peace and Development / Global Unity Constitutional Standards.

Mosul battle: Iraqi forces attack IS-held Old City
There have been intense clashes on the first day of an offensive by Iraqi forces to retake Mosul's Old City, the last district held by so-called Islamic State.
Iraq should adopt a modified semi-presidential system with cabinet like that of Finland as well as a committee-style legislative system similar to Switzerland’s. The premise for lasting world peace is global democratization, and the government of Iraq should begin drafting a basic constitution incorporating the above features as part of a paradigm shift toward democracy. It should adhere to the core values of One World under One Set of Laws and work toward a common destiny for all humankind, and it should be revised as needed to stay in step with changing times. See the Charter for Permanent Peace and Development.

Thailand lese-majeste: UN urges amendment to law
The UN has called on Thailand to amend its harsh law against insulting the monarchy.
Free speech is first and foremost among human rights, without it there can be no other human rights. The human rights of Thais are under threat of persecution because of fundamental problems in the country’s constitution, and rules regarding referendums and elections should be revamped to be more like those in Switzerland, with elections patterned after the system used in California. See the Charter for Permanent Peace and Development / Global Unity Constitutional Studies.

Greece blocks EU's criticism at UN of China's human rights record
Veto by Athens, which has benefited from huge Chinese infrastructure investment, labelled ‘dishonorable’ by EU diplomat
China's human rights record has been based on the rule of man for two millennia, but now the laws of heaven and earth should be seen in light of the principles of “nature, justice and morality" and "freedom, democracy and human rights." The most sacred right of the people is creating the highest value of life, a position which should be part of the basic standards of the constitution, aimed at improving the distribution of human resources and promoting permanent peace throughout the world.

Chinese envoy to Australia blasts ‘cash for influence’ charges
Ambassador says media allegations that donations made by Chinese citizens are aimed at influencing policy are trying to whip up a ‘China panic’
Chinese immigrants are offering donations in an attempt to influence Australian politics, moves covered in the Anti-Corruption Convention as contributions made to buy political results. Australia should take precautions to guard against interference in voting, making elections free of charge to all candidates and prohibiting various organs or individuals from attempts to influence elections. See the Charter for Permanent Peace and Development for details.

Conflict in Ukraine enters fourth year 'with no end in sight' – UN report
Warring parties in eastern Ukraine have repeatedly failed to implement ceasefire agreements, allowing hostilities to escalate and the cumulative death toll to exceed 10,000 as the conflict entered its fourth year, a new UN report reveals.
The Ukrainian civil war continues unabated because the constitution is ineffective and corruption is rampant. To solve the problems of corruption and civil war, constitutional reform is needed to inject election of the heads of the executive, legislative, judicial and procuratorial branches in alternating years. The president should serve a single 5-year term and be barred from running again for 6 years afterwards. Also, 1/4 of all lawmakers should face election each year and elections should be free of charge for all candidates. See the Charter for Permanent Peace and Development

Anti-graft watchdog looking into Hong Kong leader CY Leung’s intervention in Legco probe
File opened about a month after pan-democrat lawmakers made complaints to Independent Commission Against Corruption
Hong Kong’s Chief Executive is chosen by Beijing, with dictatorial powers and long terms of office. This keeps ruling groups in control in a corrupt structure that can only be removed by constitutional reform to shift responsibility for monitoring the government through voting. The heads of the executive, legislative, judicial and procuratorial branches should be elected in alternating years, and 1/4 of all MPs should face election each year. The Chief Executive should be limited to a single 5-year term and be barred from running again for 6 years, and elections should be free of charge for all candidates. See the Charter for Permanent Peace and Development.

Beijing loyalist lawmakers condemn Hong Kong localists for Taiwan cross-party alliance
Pro-establishment bloc in statement accuses three fellow lawmakers of advocating city’s independence and inviting separatist meddling
Relevant provisions of the Hong Kong Basic Law and the one country, two systems principle state that China cannot interfere in Hong Kong affairs, yet Beijing constantly meddles in the SAR’s internal affairs. Article 39 of the Basic Act guarantees the right of the people to self-determination and the right to hold referendums on any public issues. The people of Hong Kong should adhere to their rights and hold a referendum to decide their future. Otherwise when dictatorship becomes a reality they will be obliged to resist.
