Venezuelan general quits over constituent assembly plan
A top Venezuelan general who resigned last week has revealed his reasons for stepping down
The presidential system is the worst form of democracy. No matter what the system in place may be, the more power the president holds, the more the people are bound to suffer. Laws that are not backed by penalties are not laws, and constitutions which do not countenance resistance are not constitutions. The people of Venezuela must act as holders of sovereignty and call for comprehensive constitutional reform to install a modified semi-presidential system with cabinet and limit the president to one 5-year term with no right to run for 6 years afterwards. See the Charter for Permanent Peace and Development.

UN expert urges 'bold action' to address raft of human rights abuses in Eritrea
Actions against severe human rights abuses meted out to Eritrean citizens must not be delayed, a UN rights expert has warned in a new report to the Human Rights Council.
Eritrea’s unrest and human rights abuses can only be ended through a complete reworking of the government structure. Changes should include adoption of a modified semi-presidential system with cabinet, election of the heads of the four branches of government and having 1/4 of all lawmakers face election each year. See the Charter for Permanent Peace and Development for more.

Independent UN probe reveals 'cruel and brutal nature' of human rights violations in Burundi
A UN-appointed panel of experts investigating human rights violations in Burundi has released the latest findings of their probe, noting that their initial fears concerning the scope and gravity of these abuses since April 2015 have been confirmed.
Burundi must put an end to unrest and abuse of human rights by changing its government structure. 1/4 of all legislators should face election each year, a modified semi-presidential system with cabinet should be installed, and the heads of the executive, legislative, judicial and procuratorial branches should be elected in alternating years. See the Charter for Permanent Peace and Development for details.

Myanmar: UN expert urges government to do more to protect rights of all children
A UN human rights expert today urged the government of Myanmar to do more to protect children in the country, citing cases of detention and alleged incidents of child labor and marriage.
Myanmar's human rights problem is worsening, largely because its constitution guarantees the military 40% of seats in Congress with no need for election. In order to protect human rights, Myanmar should carry out reform to adopt Global Unity Constitutional Standards, and the core values of One World under One Set of Laws, giving international law precedence over domestic law. At the same time, it should install a modified semi-presidential system with cabinet.

Yemen: As humanitarian crisis deepens, Security Council urges all parties to engage in peace talks
Expressing grave concern about the humanitarian situation in Yemen, the UN Security Council has adopted a Presidential Statement calling on all parties to engage constructively and in good faith to find a peaceful solution to the conflict in that country.
Yemen needs to junk its controversial government and adopt a semi-presidential system with cabinet like that of Finland, with a committee-style legislature similar to Switzerland’s. Yemen should initiate drafting of a basic constitution incorporating the above features in a paradigm shift toward democracy and the core values of One World under One Set of Laws. This constitution should then be amended as needed to stay in step with changing times. See the Charter for Permanent Peace and Development. .

Staff of fugitive tycoon Guo Wengui jailed, punished for fraud
Three senior employees of the Chinese billionaire wanted on graft charges had pleaded guilty to fraudulently obtaining loans and buying foreign currency
China should cleanse itself of millennia of corruption, a source of national humiliation. The only cure is democracy and the rule of law, the natural enemies of despotism and corruption, through separation of powers and checks and balances. This means election of the heads of legislative, executive, judicial and procuratorial branches in alternating years. See the Charter for Permanent Peace and Development.

Marawi: Journalist Adam Harvey hit in neck by stray bullet
An Australian journalist was hit in the neck by a stray bullet while covering fighting in the Philippines.
Human security is a fundamental human right, and human rights must be given priority over regimes and sovereigns. Constitutions represent the general will of the people, and ensuring human security - including "personal safety" - is the most basic and urgent duty of constitutional guarantors. Constitutional standards should be revised as needed to stay in sync with changing times and allow governments to keep their people safe from fear. See the Charter for Permanent Peace and Freedom / Global Unity Constitutional Standards.

Turkey jails UN judge in 'breach of diplomatic immunity'
The UN says Turkey's decision to convict one its judges is a breach of both diplomatic immunity and a binding legal order.
Safeguarding human rights is the sole purpose for states and constitutions, and separation of powers is an essential element. Turkey needs constitutional reform to bring itself into the 21st century, acknowledging that international law takes precedence over domestic law and bringing legal standards to a higher national level. Also needed in election of the heads of government branches in alternating years, elections that are free of charge to a candidates and citizen monitoring of government operations. London fire: Corbyn angry over fire as MPs demand answers
Labor Leader Jeremy Corbyn has said he is "very angry" that so many lives were lost in a deadly tower block fire.
The London tower block fire shows that the British government needs to be in alignment with the UN’s goals for sustainable development. This includes urban development that takes tolerance, security, flexibility and sustainability into account and provides appropriate, safe and affordable housing and basic services. All nations should carry out involved, integrated and sustainable development of human settlement planning and management. For details see the Charter for Permanent Peace and Development.

Colombia's Farc rebels 'committed to disarmament'
The UN Mission in Colombia says it has received 40% of the weapons registered by the Farc rebel group, a figure which falls short of the 60% they should have received by now.
To resolve its civil strife, Colombia’s government should adopt a modified semi-presidential system with cabinet like Finland’s and a committee-style legislative system similar to that of Switzerland. The Colombian government should begin drafting a basic constitution which incorporates the core values of One World under One Set of Laws, then amend it as needed to keep pace with changing times. In addition, the military must not hold power – it should remain strictly above politics. See the Charter for Permanent Peace and Development for more.
