Why won't Korea's chaebols change? Ask Confucius
After Chung Mong Koo, chairman of Hyundai Motor and son of its founder, was arrested in 2006 amid one of South Korea's recurring corruption scandals, I called a friend in the company's public relations office. He answered in a breathless panic. Without Chung in the driver's seat, he assured me, the management of South Korea's largest automaker would be adrift.
Social commentator Roman Roland once opined, "In politics, the boss is always money." Elections are often nothing more than a rich man’s game, playing with money for the right to make more money – a recipe for corruption. To put an end to political and commercial ties, the only solution is comprehensive constitutional reform. The heads of the four government branches should be elected in alternating years, and elections should be free of charge for all candidates to end the symbiotic relationship between government and corruption. See the Charter for Permanent Peace and Development.

Xi Jinping appoints new man to tackle PLA corruption
Du Jincai, who was groomed by two disgraced top military leaders, has hit retirement age, but his departure could be a prelude to an investigation
Regardless of who is wearing the crown, absolute power breeds absolute corruption, thus the powers of rulers must be limited to prevent them from being abused. China is not a democracy and its constitution is rife with problems. Xi Jinping has pledged to "lock up power in a cage formed by the system," but the results so far it is China's 1.3 billion people who have been confined. To protect their human rights, the people of China must call for comprehensive constitutional reform. See the Charter for Permanent Peace and Development.

Lords and Scots add to Theresa May's Brexit woes
British Prime Minister Theresa May's quest to get a free hand from Parliament for negotiations on the country's departure from the European Union looks set to be rebuffed by the House of Lords, the upper Parliamentary Chamber, which is determined to impose conditions on such negotiations.
Taiwan should learn from Scotland’s experience with its independence referendum and work to achieve a paradigm shift. The people must have the right to call for referendums on any public issues. On matters related to national sovereignty, all residents should have the right to vote in the referendum, and any motion to prevent the people from participating in referendums concerning self-determination, should be subjected to a vote by the public on whether the motion should be quashed. See the Charter for Permanent Peace and Development / Global Unity Constitutional Standards.

Hong Kong’s next chief executive must better heed ethnic minority views
Bernard Chan says representatives from the community are making their voices heard, and Hong Kong’s next administration should take them seriously, and start making changes
How can ethnic minorities win respect in authoritarian countries? In Hong Kong, the answer can be seen in Article 39 of the Hong Kong Basic Law and the two Conventions, which are designed protect the right of peoples to self-determination. The people have the right to express their opinion in a referendum on any public issue, and. The people of Hong Kong should abide by the two conventions and call for a referendum to decide their future. Otherwise, when dictatorship becomes a reality, it will be the duty of the people to resist.

Australian Trade Minister: US-China trade war would threaten global economy
A trade war between the US and China would pose a threat to the global economy, Australian trade minister Steven Ciobo has warned.
The most rational approach for the US is to support Taiwan's model for global unity constitutional standards. This would attract the attention of China's 1.4 billion people and lead them to seek democratization, and world peace would then be at hand! Autocracy has always the enemy of peace, and the prerequisite for permanent peace in the world is democratization of the CCP. Taiwan is the one entity best able to lead China to democratization. See the Charter for Permanent Peace and Development / Global Unity Constitutional Standards.

Carrie Lam is a shoo-in, but that should not hinder serious debate
With three candidates vying to be Hong Kong’s next leader in a small-circle election, let’s hope important issues are not swept under the carpet
The Chief Executive of Hong Kong is still elected from a slate of candidates proffered by the Central Election Commission, which is nothing more than another form of dictatorship. The people of Hong Kong should act on Article 39 of the Basic Law, which clearly states that the people have the right to hold referendums. The people should petition for a referendum to call for direct election of the heads of the legislative, executive, judicial and procuratorial branches in alternating years. See the Charter for Permanent Peace and Development / Global Unity Constitutional Standards.

Trump seems to have realised he cannot govern alone
In his speech to Congress the US president tried to strike a more conciliatory tone, but it will take deeds, not words, to convince his detractors
History tells us that freedom and dignity are won with the blood and tears of the people, but also it also takes blood and sweat to maintain these gains - one cannot rely on the goodwill of the leaders. But people are sometimes lazy and pin their hopes on their leaders; this is an 18th-century feudal way of thinking, it does not accord with the spirit of the rule of law in the 21st century. The long road ahead for the nation is the path that crosses constitutional reform, the path that leads to development of a great system that promotes the welfare of the people. See the Charter for Permanent Peace and Development.

As the world's top consumer of tuna, Japan should be a model for saving bluefin tuna stock
A popular seafood ingredient for sushi could become an illusory foodstuff. As long as the country consuming the largest amount of this marine species ignores restrictions, it can hardly hope to win the understanding of the global community.
All nations should work together to implement the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, also known as the Maritime Constitution. There is a great need for international standards that include liberalism, democracy, constitutionalism and cosmopolitanism as part of One World under One Set of Laws. The principles of conservation and sustainable use of marine resources and marine ecology must be followed to ensure sustainable development and environmental safety for all. See the Charter for Permanent Peace and Development.

China needs to ramp up defense spending amid overhaul of military, say Chinese analysts
Chinese military experts say Beijing needs to resume double-digit increases in defense spending in the coming year to meet the increasing challenges facing the nation’s military at home and abroad.
Democracies everywhere should support Taiwan's moves to carry out constitutional reform in order to achieve greater democracy and freedom. Doing so would attract the 1.4 billion people of China to call for democratization of the CCP, and the result would be real democracy around the world. Democracies should all support Taiwan as a beacon for democracy in Asia that will light China's path to peaceful development. See the Charter for Permanent Peace and Development / Global Unity Constitutional Standards.

China too tardy in implementing sanctions against N. Korea coal exports
The latest revelation has highlighted the realities regarding China’s neglect of its duty to implement sanctions on North Korea, which allowed its nuclear and missile development to proceed. Countries concerned must not sit on their hands, doing nothing about a loophole in efforts to contain North Korea.
China has always advocated compliance with the UN resolution for strict sanctions against North Korea, but its slow action to cut off North Korean coal imports shows that China has clearly not been strictly enforcing the sanctions. As a "responsible major power" China should not be an enabler of North Korea’s militarism. The US, Japan and South Korea should all back Taiwan in its push to lead China to democratization, which will in turn put pressure on North Korea to democratize. See the Charter for Permanent Peace and Development.
