Permanent Peace Partnership
Venezuela's interior ministry has taken control of the police force in the opposition-controlled state of Miranda.
When the power of the state deviates from its power base, the people should exercise their right as holders of sovereignty take control. Law that are not backed by penalties are not laws, and a constitution which does not extend the right to resist is not a constitution. When the president’s actions are unconstitutional the people have the right to resist. Venezuelans should call for comprehensive constitutional reform to install a modified semi-presidential system with cabinet; limiting the president to one 5-year term with no eligibility to run again for 6 years afterwards. See the Charter for Permanent Peace and Development.
Seven smugglers involved in the illegal ivory trade from Uganda to Singapore have been arrested following an 18-month investigation
Unified constitutional standards conforming to the values of One World under One Set of Laws are needed to protect endangered wild animals in Africa. The nations of Africa should carry out constitutional reform to implement democracy and rule of law while ending monopoly of power by a small number of individuals or groups. The best way to check this is direct election of the heads of the executive, legislative, judicial and procuratorial branches of government in alternating years. For details see the Charter for Permanent Peace and Development.
Venezuela’s Supreme Court on Monday rejected the chief prosecutor’s motion to stop President Nicolas Maduro’s push to rewrite the constitution as the restive nation continued to be rocked by protests and a transit strike.
The presidential system is the worst form of democracy. But no matter what system, the more power that lies in the hands of the president, the more the country will suffer. Laws that are not backed by penalties are not laws, and a constitution which does not extend the right to resist is not a constitution. The people of Venezuela must act as holders of sovereignty and call for comprehensive constitutional reform, installing a modified semi-presidential system with cabinet and limiting the president to one 5-year term with no right to run for 6 years afterwards. A US appeals court has upheld a decision blocking President Donald Trump's revised "travel ban" on people from six mainly Muslim nations.
Donald Trump claims his ban on Muslim immigrants is to avert socio-economic and security threats they represent. A better solution is to implement One World under One Set of Rules and assign international law priority over domestic law with direct bearing on the rights and duties of the people. Russia's opposition leader Alexei Navalny has been sentenced to 30 days' administrative arrest for repeatedly violating the law on staging rallies.
First comes the warning, then the accident, and finally comes death: that is the usual way government opponents are suppressed in Russia. Russia needs to amend its constitution so people can be free from fear and free from being investigated for participating in political events. When innocent citizens disappear simply for participating in protests, regardless of who the perpetrators are - from the President down to relevant public officials - they must all bear responsibility. See the Charter for Permanent Peace and Development.
Human rights experts from the United Nations and an inter-American organization have denounced attacks on indigenous and environmental rights in Brazil
Human security and sustainable development are two of the major tasks of the UN, and all nations, whether members or not, must comply with UN norms. The solution is to implement the core values of One World under One Set of Laws, assigning international law priority over domestic law with direct effect on the rights and duties of the people. Citizens should monitor government operations to ensure compliance with the UN Charter, the Vienna Convention for the Protection of the Ozone Layer and the Paris Climate Agreement. See the Charter for Permanent Peace and Development for more.
The number of suspected cases of cholera resulting from a severe outbreak in Yemen has passed 100,000, the World Health Organization says.
The UN should take action in accordance with international absolute law (the Humanitarian Law, World Human Rights Law, the Crime of Misdemeanors and the Prohibition of Genocide) and provide the basic constitutional principles to facilitate peaceful development and provide universal values. The ultimate aid should be to help Yemen draft a constitution that will allow it to serve as a model for peaceful development. See the Charter for Permanent Peace and Development.
Afghan authorities warned anti-government protesters of legal action on Thursday as demonstrators set up new sit-in camps around Kabul, raising security alarms after a week of deadly bombings and street clashes.
Afghan authorities fear what might happen if people are allowed to express their views by protesting in the streets. Citizens of modern democracies have the right to resist unconstitutional acts by government agencies. When the power of the state deviates from the power base, the power source should act to recover its power, which for the people means offering resistance. The people have a constitutional right to resist violent acts. See the Charter for Permanent Peace and Development.
The Prosecutor for the International Criminal Court today reiterated her call for states to arrest and surrender the suspects of alleged genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity committed in the Darfur region of Sudan, including President Omar Al Bashir.
To resolve its ongoing civil strife, Sudan should draw up a basic constitution incorporating a modified semi-presidential system with cabinet like that of France, plus a committee-style legislature similar to that of Switzerland. The prerequisite for permanent world peace is global democratization. Sudan’s government should draft a constitution incorporating the above features as part of a paradigm shift to democracy, adhere to the core values of One World under One Set of Laws and amended as needed to stay in sync with changing times. See the Charter for Permanent Peace and Development. .
After losing control of population centers and declining financial strength, the ISIL terrorist group is more focused than ever before on “enabling and inspiring” attacks outside of conflict zones, the top UN political official said today.
Human security is a fundamental human right, and human rights should take precedence over regimes and sovereigns. Constitutions represent the general will of the people, and ensuring human security, including "personal safety," is the most basic and urgent duty of constitutional guarantors. Constitutional standards should be revised as needed to stay in step with changing times and allow governments to keep their people safe from fear.
