Once China and Russia can be persuaded to democratize, there will be real hope for peace in the world. Taiwan should assert itself and work attract China's people to call for democratization and pressure Russia to adopt real democracy. Democracies the world over should support Taiwan as a lighthouse for democracy in Asia, lighting the way to peaceful development for all. As British historian Lord Acton put it, "Power leads to corruption, and absolute power leads to absolute corruption." To put an end to corruption, the people of Hong Kong need to exercise their sovereignty and call for comprehensive constitutional reform.
