The tax bill currently being put together in the US Congress is a Christmas gift for the rich. Loaded with loopholes andconcessions to big corporations it make  up for some of the cuts in tax rates at the top by taking more from 'mom and pop' businesses and the American middle class while blithely ignoring the final effect on the national debt. The people of the US need to wake up and exercise their sovereignty to call for changes that will make officials and lawmakers more responsive to their needs. The heads of major branches should be elected, 1/4 of all lawmakers should face election each year, and top officials should be limited to one 5-year term and barred from running again for 6 years afterwards. Freedom of speech matters just as much online as it does offline.
Free speech is a universal value, and the American people should call for constitutional reform to ensure media freedom and prevent the government oligarchy from monopolizing the media, the internet and other channels of communications. The current administration is steadily encroaching on the rights of the public to enjoy free and open access to the internet in order to allow moneyed interests to exploit users by imposing additional fees at every turn. At the same time, governments around the world are enacting laws that exact punishment for online expressions of opinion and criticisms of policy and politicians. Article 35 of the Constitution law of People's Republic of China stipulates that Citizens of the People's Republic of China enjoy freedom of speech, of the press, of assembly, of association, of procession, and of demonstration. Article 39 of the Hong Kong Basic Law stipulates that the people of the SAR have right to self-determination under the two international human rights conventions. The people of Hong Kong cannot take their rights for granted. In Switzerland the threshold for petitioning a referendum is only 50,000 signatures, and with that citizens can express their opinion through the ballot box instead of taking to the streets.
